Do you have a little girl who loves all things mermaids? If so, you’re in luck! Creating a Mermaid-Inspired Kids Room is easier than you might think. All it takes is a little bit of paint and some creative wall decor.
In this article, we’ll show you how to create a mermaid-inspired bedroom in just three days. This project is perfect for kids of all ages and can be easily customized to fit your child’s unique style.
Now I like the subtle look of a mermaid room, I didn’t want it to look like I just picked up tons of mermaid items and threw them together. Plus she is 8, and we all know how fast they grow out of loving stuff. So that way this is a Mermaid Inspired Theme with a Vibrant color palette.
Let’s get started!
Mermaid Inspired Paint or WallPaper

One way to change the whole look of a room is by changing the paint color or adding wallpaper. You can either go with one solid color or get creative and use two colors to create an ombre effect. We suggest finding an inspirational photo or wall art and grabbing the color out of it.
Once you’ve decided on your colors, break out the paintbrushes and get to work!
We decided to go with a pretty teal color for her mermaid-inspired room, and were inspired by a wallpaper design but decided to DIY the feature wall using mermaid colors.

I love the wallpaper ideas for the mermaid room. But as you know in my last wallpaper-inspired room I used stencil because wallpaper is hella expensive. So here are a few options

Kids BedRoom Furniture
When selecting furniture for a Mermaid-Inspired Kids Room, opt for pieces that are both functional and stylish.
For the most part, we used existing furniture pieces from her old bedroom and around the house.
Mix the old & the new
Since we already had a white bed with under-bed storage, I just covered it with a colorful bed set to make it a perfect place for lounging and sleeping, while the storage below provides a place to store extra bedding (cause we know the linen closet is not built for it) and off-season clothes.
The IKEA Kallax storage cube in white added a side table function and doubles as a place to store toys and books.
A vanity set that we already had was perfect for getting ready in the morning and doing hair and playing in makeup.
And lastly, we added a desk that was repurposed from the living area in our townhome.
We put her dresser inside her closet to make more space for playtime.
For this room, we wanted to keep things pretty simple and not too busy since the colors are already quite vibrant.
Mermaid Wall Art
Now that the walls are painted, it’s time to add some wall decor. You can repurpose old picture frames by painting them with metallic paint and adding sea creatures like starfish or seashells.
You can find tons of options online or in stores, or you can get creative and DIY your own. We found these cute frames in Hobby Lobby which would be perfect for a little girl’s room. We also ran to the dollar store and Target to pick a few items that blended well with the room.
Another idea is to go on Pinterest and find DIY Mermaid wall decor
Whatever you choose, just make sure it compliments the colors of your walls. and you could even add some wall decals or stickers of ocean animals like dolphins, turtles, and of course, mermaids!
Little girls would love waking up every morning in their very own underwater paradise.
Another way to Transform a room is by changing the bedding. You could find some really cute mermaid-themed bedding online or in stores. Last time I check there were not many options.
You could also make your own bedding by sewing together some fabric with an ocean design or pattern if you’re crafty.
I wanted her room to have lots of vibrant colors and didn’t want to overdo the mermaid look so I went with a bright comforter from Target. Added a mermaid tail blanket and we were done.
Adding some sparkly pillowcases would also be perfect for this theme!
Vibrant Bedroom Accessories
Now it’s time to accessorize!
Look for items like rugs, lamps, wall art, and door hangers that fit with your chosen theme. You can also DIY some fun accent pieces like hanging paper lanterns decorated with shells or real seashells glued onto Mason jars for unique vases.
Fill the room with other ocean creatures, along with toys and stuffed animals that match the theme.
We made sure to add some glittery finishing touches and string lights to the curtains
I grabbed a lamp from target that had similar colors to the theme.
Added a swing chair for seating for days she wants to relax in her room reading a book or playing Roadbox with her cousins.
Mermaid Inspired Vibrant Girly Room
Achieving a perfectly themed kids’ room doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. By following these simple steps, you can easily transform any space into an underwater wonderland that will make your little girl feel like royalty. With just a little paint, some new bedding and accessories, and a bit of imagination, you can easily turn any room into a mermaid paradise.
One of the most important things when it comes to decorating a Mermaid-Inspired Kids Room is to use colors that complement each other. You want to avoid using colors that will clash and make the room feel incomplete.
